American
Le Mans Series - Road America - Elkhart Lake, WI - 2003
On
any given race weekend there are several races involving different classes
of cars or different race series all together. The ALMS weekend in 2003
included the big show, the ALMS race which is made up of 4 classes of
cars itself, all on the track at the same time. With Le Mans prototype
cars from Audi to GT class cars, mostly Porsche 911 GT3s. The speed
diferentials between the different classes of cars on the track at the
same time is a very real part of the race.
In
addition to the ALMS cars there was the Trans-Am series, the longest
running road race series in the United States, made up of Corvettes,
Camaros, Jaguars, and a handful of other makes, big, loud cars.
The
Speed Channel's SPEED Touring Car Series was also present. This field
was full of BMW 3 series, Mazda Protogés, Acura Integras, and
a few other makes.
Then
there were the Strana Super Trucks. These are actually semi trucks (without
trailers) that race. Semi truck racing is really popular in other parts
of the world. This was just an exhibition series in 2003, they were
trying to create interest in the series.
